Room décor can say a lot about you, especially when it comes to lighting.

Lighting? You wouldn’t think so, but how you choose to light your place up can help you achieve many different sorts of “moods” per say. What are some of these moods you ask? Let’s take a look.

Romantic:

Well, I had to start with this one since it’s probably the first one that came to your head when you saw lighting and mood paired together. Romantic lighting can be done with those cool lamps that have a dim setting, which is great when you flip on some soft tunes and slowly make the lights a little less bright. Definitely a fun and flirty move on your part.

If you don’t want a fancy dimming light, you can always take the old fashioned route and simply kill the lights and adorn your romantic setting with candles. This move will earn some brownie points on your part, and will make your space smell wonderful, another plus!

Cozy:

Lighting can be cozy? It most certainly can, and for a small price too. Having some small Christmas lights or bulb lights around your bed can provide you with a nice cozy feeling as you snuggle under a blanket. Flickering lights can even embody the sense of a fire, so even if you don’t have a fireplace, you can kind of pretend you do.

A lava lamp can also be a cool investment if the cozy mood is what you are often after. Watching that can actually be really relaxing, and it creates a nice glow in a dimly lit/dark room.

Study:

This is where you want light, and a lot of it. It will start to hurt your eyes if you are in a dark room with only a desk lamp on as you are trying to concentrate on your homework. You’ll also tend to feel sleepier with less light, so the more the merrier.

Kick backs:

If you are having a kick back at your house, there are plenty of ways to play with the lighting in order to get a party mood going. You can go with a lot of light, so everyone can see who they are talking to and won’t be running into anything. This is good for when you have a small group over for mainly talking and things like that.

If people are feeling the need to dance, you can blast the tunes and dim the lights, maybe bringing out those Christmas lights so they can somewhat see what is going on, or invest in one of those cool disco lights that is adorned with multiple colors and spins.

If they don’t give you a headache, you could also go with some strobe lights and have a dance/rave party at your place.

Relaxing:

When you need some “you” time, fill your tub with bubbles, kill the lights, and surround the tub with candles. The warm water, the wonderful smells, and the soft flickering light on your eyelids will make you forget about that ten page paper due the next day in no time.

Outside:

If you have a yard, you can make it less creepy at night by hanging some Christmas lights in a tree or by having some cool solar powered lights that you can stick into the grass. Those babies are awesome because they have a soft glow to them and they get their power from the sun so you don’t have to worry about changing bulbs or anything.

They will make those late night garbage can runs less horror movie-like, and are also great for those warmer nights where you can sit outside with some friends and enjoy the great outdoors (don’t forget the bug spray).

Inviting:

You want a nice, inviting place to come home to after a long day, and lighting can definitely help you achieve that. Lamps with warm glows are wonderful for this, because they provide a lot of light without being too harsh. This will also go off of personal preference. I personally love a lot of light, so the more lamps, the better.

After a scary movie:

If you’re like me and can’t handle scary movies but somehow get convinced by your friends to watch one anyway, you are probably a little too freaked out to go to sleep. In these instances, pull out your handy-dandy night light.

Sure we are in college, but who cares? Adults are allowed to get scared too. If you don’t want people to see your Winnie the Pooh night-light, you can always just turn on Christmas lights around your bed or leave a hall light on. The hall light is probably the last choice, since it could potentially bother your housemates.

As you can see, a little detail like lighting can sure make a big difference. Keep this in mind as you are shopping for your new place, and ask yourself what kinds of moods you are going to want to be setting.

Happy lighting!
