Health and Fitness Never Go Out of Style

By Amanda Cohen on January 25, 2015

People tend to poke fun at Americans for our unhealthy and overindulging eating habits. However, the fitness and health movements have changed the United States as we know it, and these changes are most visible on college campuses.

Walking around campus at the University of Michigan, is like walking through a commercial for Lululemon, Nike, UnderArmour, and Adidas. Students have made fitness a priority for a variety of reasons—to stay healthy and keep active, to relieve stress, and to do something other than study.

You see a variety of people along the fitness and health spectrum at the University; some people workout because they truly love it, some people workout to compensate for the late night Pizza House they ate, and others workout just because it’s fun.

Since more students are working out and eating healthy, the freshman-15 is no longer a consequence of college. Individuals are happier, healthier, and studying is not the only activity we have to do with our time. Most notably, students no longer constantly de-stress by ordering pizza and milkshakes (although I have been guilty of ordering late-night snacks after a long week of class, it happens).

Not only does Michigan have the CCRB, NCRB, IM Building, and the Ross Gym, but all over campus there are a variety of different places to engage in fun workouts. Some people go to the various yoga studios on campus (there is even a club dedicated to all the yogis on campus), while other people take advantage of the studio Barre Code to do a ballet-inspired workouts.

In addition to the various workout opportunities, Michigan’s campus offers so many healthy food options. All of the dining halls have a salad bar, a vegetable station, and gluten-free items. However, if you are looking to have a yummy, but healthy dinner with your friends outside of the dining hall, you can go to Revive, Salads-Up, Babo, Café Zola, and more!

There is no better place to keep your New Year’s resolution of exercising more and eating healthier than Ann Arbor. So grab a gym buddy and start movin’ and shakin’! However, if you want to order pizza or Insomnia Cookies, remember that this is college, and that is still definitely acceptable.
