Time Management Tips for Busy College Students

By Juliette Sebock on October 8, 2015

Between class, jobs, extracurriculars, and some semblance of a social life, today’s college students strive to do it all.  Though balancing that internship with a full course-load, your part-time barista position, debate team, choir, rugby, and your new boyfriend is intimidating, it teaches you incredible time management skills.  Not only are these crucial abilities for college, but they’ll help you for years to come!

Invest in a planner.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:  A planner is your best friend.  Whether you choose a high-end Lily P. or a free app like Google Calendar, get something in which you can record your many activities.  From there, color-code it!

Try making your least favorite tasks your favorite color— that way, they’re at least pretty to look at!

Turn off your phone. I know, it’s nearly impossible to go tech-free for five minutes in the modern age (that’s why this is on a website, yes?).  Sometimes, though, the key to getting things done (and doing so promptly) is to get away from the temptation of text message dings and Facebook notifications.  I promise, Taylor Swift’s latest Insta will be there when your paper is written.  Use an app like SelfControl to really maintain your focus.

Breathe.  Believe it or not, this is a crucial part of existing.  It sounds full of baloney, but stopping to take a deep breath when life starts to get overwhelming can help.

Get a reputation.  While Hester Prynne is hardly a prime role model, there’s something to be said for being known for something— when that something is good.  Being known as the boy/girl who does it all means your friends will understand when you turn down Sig Chi on a Friday night for that take-home midterm you know you need to finish.  Just make sure you don’t let that same reputation pressure you into doing too much.

Make a playlist.  Make a list of the most upbeat, inspiring songs you can get your hands on and play them whenever you start to slip up.  Mine starts with “I’ll Make A Man Out Of You” from Mulan and motivates me instantly.

Sleep.  Your body will thank you with energy and productivity.

Utilize a to-do list.  Whether its on a Post-It, in your planner, or via an app, write down everything.  Just getting it out of your brain is relaxing, and it feels amazing to check things off!

Believe in yourself.  Corny, but true.  If you think you can do it, you probably can!
