If you ever find yourself in search of more artistic activities in Tallahassee, you might want to check out literature readings and Open Mic night at The Warehouse, located conveniently on Gaines Street in College Town.

Every Tuesday night at 8 p.m. during the semester, different authors come out and read a short story, poem, fiction, or non-fiction. They are mainly students at FSU or FAMU, or just local writers. The environment is very relaxed with nice dim lightening for an intimate touch between the reader and the audience.

For your own entertainment, there are pool tables, a bar, and other small refreshments. Along with the reading series the Warehouse also hosts Open Mic Night. They feature various amateur musical talent in Tallahassee ranging from solo artists to collective bands. So if you are more of a music fan, this will be the event for you. There is something for everyone to experience and enjoy.

For an English course of mine, I was prompted to attend a reading for an upcoming assignment. I was glad that I finally had the opportunity to go because I have heard such great things about The Warehouse.

Last week on the 18th, the reading that I attended had two readings. Every week there are two readings per session. Both readers were fantastic but my favorite out of the two readers was the first reader, Laura Roque.

Before she read her short story she was introduced by a close friend who gave a short biography of who the reader was and what she does at Florida State and in Tallahassee. Laura is a student who is studying creative writing and is from Hialeah, Florida. Her short story was about growing up in Miami and later on enduring an abusive relationship with her ex-boyfriend. She went to the University of Florida before coming to Florida State.

I really liked her and her story and I connected even more to her story because I’m from Miami too and her story was very nostalgic for me. Her descriptions of partying with her friends and the supped up Honda Civics were great and gave the audience a real feel of what Miami is like. Even more touching was her tale of putting up with the abuse from her ex boyfriend when she attended UF.

She explained that after her relationship ended, even though she learned a great deal about herself, a part of her was still tarnished. She added intimate details, along with humor allowing us to truly connect to her story and her life. The way she read out loud made me feel relaxed as if she was a close friend telling me a funny story. The way she delivered the writing was a great advantage to her overall delivery. If she read her story in a very serious tone the emotion and lightheartedness of it wouldn’t have connected the right way. Overall, I thought that it was beautiful of her to be able to tell such personal details of her life. I could tell that she put a lot of work into this story and had pride in it.

After attending a reading, I am sure you will feel really inspired to perhaps write a story of your own because that is exactly how I felt. Even if you are not exactly gifted or love to write your own stories, you will want to create something that you are passionate about! Or perhaps they can be of aid to you when your writing your own creative essays for your classes. You will be motivated to reach outside your comfort zone and write material that you love! Either way it is a great environment for inspiration.

Secondly, going to these events at the Warehouse gives you a sense of community in Tallahassee! It is easy to get caught up in our own personal lives and dealing with stress from school and work. It is wonderful sometimes to step back and attend socials like these to have fun and take a look at what your fellow Noles and Tallahassee community is doing. College Town is one of my favorite areas in Tallahassee and The Warehouse is right in the heart of it. Surrounded by various restaurants, shops, and art events, it is definitely somewhere to go and have fun.

Lastly, one of the most beneficial reason why you should check out The Warehouse is EXTRA CREDIT! Your English or Music professor might not mention or require that you attend but there is a great chance that if you let your professor know, they would be willing to give you credit! Usually you will just have to write a short synopsis of what you viewed.

Whether you go to a reading or an open mic night, you are bound to have a really good time! Make sure to take a friend!
